Smocking

Butterfly Kisses Smocked Baby Gown           3 hrs

Charmed by a tattered pastel motif on a circa 1920’s  garment found at the Portobello Road flea market in London, Debbie designed this sweet little smocked  bishop style baby gown.   Delicate silken butterflies flutter  in between the smocked channels on the front of this   whisper soft silky satin batiste confection. Working on the pre-pleated gown front, students learn  to add flat sections for embroidery to smocking, tie off individual pleated areas and smock on channels using simple geometric stitches. Debbie also shares her unique method for applying tiny bias bands to smocking and how she transformed snippets of pastel silk ribbon into dancing butterflies. Truly nothing could be sweeter than spending time smocking butterfly kisses for a special new baby!

All (knowledge of basic geometric stitches required)

c1940 Smocked T Yoke Daygown
           9 hrs.
You’ll love smocking with rayon ribbon floss, it’s a marvelous woven bias that wraps around pleats like magic.  This soft blue Japanese lawn daygown, with two smocked channels, an embroidered T yoke, and choice of straight or puff sleeves makes a great coming home outfit for that new baby.  Light dances off the rayon smocking, embroidery, and picot edging.  Whipped underneath the piping, the trim adds a sweet touch of color without being too fussy.

Working on the pre-pleated gown front, students learn how to add a flat section to accommodate the T yoke, tie off individual pleated areas, ribbon floss needle threading tips, and smock channels using simple geometric stitches.  Then move to the sewing machine and learn how to make perfect mini piping, peter pan collars that don’t flip up, Debbie’s unique method for attaching a piped yoke to smocking, and a dreamy placket with no raw edges.  Construction techniques learned in this class will make all your smocking projects look more professional!

Intermediate- must have basic construction skills & geometric smocking skills

Creating Stacked Cable Coordinates            3 hrs.

Can't find a smocking plate to compliment a favorite fabric, sweater, embroidery or appliqué design? Then create your own coordinates using Love and Stitches translucent paper. Designer Debbie Glenn reveals her "secrets" and tips for making stacked cable smocking graphs. Students learn to draw directly on graph, to copy scaled motifs placed under the paper, and start designing their own personal smocking plate in class.

Intermediate- Advanced (proficiency in stacking required)

Direct honeycomb Smocking for Baby           3 hrs

Smocking without a pleater?  Let Debbie introduce you to direct smocking using the nostalgic spot or honeycomb stitch. This elastic stitch adds textural interest without a lot of fullness, making it great for baby clothing. Our project, a cuddle soft baby jacket is the perfect place to experiment with direct smocking, especially considering how difficult it normally is to isolate individual pleats on traditional pre-pleated flannel. Besides preparation and stitch specifics, students learn how to attach a yoke to the smocked piece using fagotting and the instructor’s perfect piped technique.

All (smocking knowledge helpful, but not required)

Fabric Manipulation Fun                              6 hrs

Expensive designer purses are turning up everywhere… so why not make your own and smock it? Debbie designed this playful, bucket style purse featuring inserts of North American lattice smocking and several other forms of fabric manipulation just for SAGA.  Join her for a fun filled day and learn how to use smocking, running, and overcast stitches to transform flat fabrics from silks to upholstery goods into exciting textural blocks.  Students will have the opportunity to experiment on a variety of fabrics, before they begin smocking inserts for their own designer bag.  Debbie will provide suggestions for stitches and pattern layout for selected fabric and review construction techniques guaranteed to produce a professional finish.

All (smocking knowledge helpful, but not required)

 Silken Sensations Evening Envelope
6 hrs.
Expensive designer bags are turning up everywhere from exclusive boutiques to red carpet events.  So many have admired Debbie’s Smocked Block purses that she designed this elegant ivory evening clutch just so students could learn the basics of fabric manipulation on a smaller, more doable project.  The envelope flap of this scrumptious silk sensation features three different inserts of North American lattice work (bow ties, surface dot honeycomb, & traditional lattice) each trimmed with delicate gimps.  Join her for a day of fabric manipulation fun and learn how to use a combination of pulled and slack stitches to transform flat silks into exciting textural blocks, plus the construction techniques required to produce a professional finish.

All: Knowledge of basic smocking stitches (Cable & Wave) helpful but not required

Smock a Rainbow                                         3 hrs

Don't you love it when a project looks so complicated, but it's really easy!   In plaid  smocking an intricate design is created using simple geometric stitches.   Students experiment with different stitch combinations, learn a technique to eliminate overlapped stitches, and then "smock a plaid rainbow" on a pre-pleated insert.   Illustrated handout includes 4 smocking plates, a pattern, and detailed instructions for creating a colorful smocked needle case.    If you enjoyed "Vertical Smocked Sleeves" class, but wanted more or are simply intrigued by plaid smocking, this class is for you.

Intermediate- Advanced (proficiency in geometric stitches required)

Stacked Success                                             3 hrs.

Do you long to create adorable velvety smooth, basket woven figures? Then this hands on stacked cable class with smocking designer Debbie Glenn is just for you!  We'll review fabric choices, pleating, blocking, back smocking, needle and floss selection, as well as proper stitch tension, color changes, positioning and execution needed to perfect your picture smocking skills. Students complete notebook samples, then begin stacking a pint sized apple insert for their favorite dolly.

    Intermediate (experience stacking cables required)

Vertical Smocked Sleeves                              3 hrs.

Vertical smocking uses basic geometric stitches in a different way. Instead of smocking left to right across rows, designs are created by stitching vertically over a limited number of pleats. Class covers supplies, basic stitch techniques, and garment application, with concentration on sleeves construction. Students smock three vertical designs on a 45" pleated broadcloth sampler. The fourth, "Woven Floss" is stitched on a doll's smocked insert sleeve.

All (knowledge of basic geometric stitches required)

Bambury Cross Shadow Appliqué Sundress   6 hrs

Moms and toddlers alike will fall in love with the pastel rocking horse on this precious pique sundress trimmed  with blue whip stitch piping.  Bambury Cross showcases a new shadow appliqué technique which eliminates the need to trim away excess underlying colored fabric and the possibility of accidentally cutting the surface fabric after stitching is finished.  Straight stitch outlining, especially  when thread matches the fabric shadows, replicates hand shadow embroidery more closely than the pin or zigzag stitch used in the traditional method.  Students learn how   to prepare pre-trimmed cut outs, sandwich fused cut outs  in between a sheer lawn top and base fabric block, outline the rocking horse motif using a straight stitch, and add  hand details.  Once the tiny insert is embellished, Debbie shares her secrets for applying perfect piping which makes the rest of the garment construction a breeze.

Banded Diaper Shirt & Nappy Cover
        6 hrs.
Banded appliqué edges add a new dimension to sewing.   Do you love the look of a satin stitched
edge on collars, cuffs, and hems... but never know
when to pivot, fear trimming away fabric, or hate
the white stabilizer & fabric "fuzzies" often left
behind.   Well then let designer Debbie Glenn
show you all the products and techniques she uses
to create beautiful satin stitched edges for
Sew Beautiful magazine.  Students gain so much confidence and practice by making notebook
samples of traditional appliqué (band inner edge)
and edge stitching (band outer edge) prior to starting the project, that most leave class with the shirt almost complete.  This precious pique diaper set with its tiny gingham appliquéd bands is sure to keep baby singing sweetly all summer long!

Blue Ribbon Cutwork Scissors Roll              6 hrs

Embellished bags for needlework supplies and projects, often referred to as “sewing frivolities”, were especially popular with Victorian ladies.  The flap of this exquisite white linen, rolled case features a blue ribbon bow nested above a satin stitched edge.  Outlining, Richleau bars, and blue organdy inserts add a touch of color and set off the design elements of this nostalgic cutwork project.

In this six-hour class, students will learn how to prepare open areas, create stabilized bars, add insertion fabrics, and finish pre-cut edges using a shortened zig zag stitch.  Debbie’s simplified edge stitching technique eliminates the tedious application of a separate padding cord yet, produces a clean, stable edge without the stabilizer fuzzies often associated with machine work.  Instead a series of straight stitches pad and then later outline the satin stitch work adding dimension and camouflaging any minor stitch imperfections. After completing three small notebook samples, students begin work on a modern sewing frivolity, which holds three pairs of embroidery scissors and has a generous pocket for additional storage.  Students are encouraged to bring their embroidery scissors to class so the pocket shape can be adapted to accommodate their personal collection.

        Intermediate (prior appliqué experience helpful)

Circa 1908 Whitework Lingerie Bag              6 hrs

This elegant whitework case is Debbie's interpretation of a circa 1908 piece on display at London's Victoria and Albert museum.   Designed much like a child's hanging pajama bag, the front flap covers the case opening.  A large high relief padded satin stitched initial punctuated with embroidery floats regally above the deeply scalloped decorative front edge.  The most amazing thing about this project is all the embroidery was done on the machine!

In this magical six-hour class Debbie shares her techniques for recreating the fabulous raised handwork found on vintage linens.  Students learn a machine applied substitute for traditional hand padding, to create cover stitches that replicate hand satin stitch work, as well as how to make fine corded scalloped edgings using their conventional zig zag sewing machines (no embroidery unit needed).

Intermediate

Circa 1909 Cutwork Heart Corset Sachet      6 hrs.

Today topped with a lace tape rosette it makes an elegant heart shaped pin cushion, doll pillow, or an adorable pocket for baby!   The dainty floral cutwork design includes sheer inserts, richleau bars, and open work. In this six hour class students learn how to create beautiful cutwork and padded scallop edges using a machine satin stitch. Drawn Threadwork by Machine                     3 hrs

Add a touch of nostalgia to your sewing room!  This delightfully feminine drawn thread work needlecase and strawberry scissors fob might be considered sewing frivolities today, but in the past ladies of taste found them to be absolute necessities!  Hemstitching is the most basic kind of drawn threadwork; this decorative stitch is made by withdrawing several parallel threads and bundling the remaining cross threads together in uniform groups.  Triangular open areas are formed between the gathered threads (single hemstitch).  Working the basic hemstitch along both edges straightens the cross threads creating a ladder like effect (double ladder hemstitch).  Let Debbie show you how to produce an authentic looking drawn thread hemstitch using your machine pin or blanket stitch.  Students learn how to prepare fabric for machine drawn threadwork, miter corners, remove and secure threads, adjust machine stitches to replicate handwork, secure hems using a single hemstitch, and add double hemstitched decorative accents.

These fun fanciful fruit towels are sure to brighten up any kitchen!

Madeira Chrysanthemum Shadow Sachet      6 hrs

Pin stitched shadow appliqué adds a flair of sophistication to any project, especially when worked on the finest linen.  In this 3hr class Debbie shares the techniques used to create the elegant circa 1901 chrysanthemum blouse featured in the spring 2002 issue of Sew Beautiful magazine.  The original floral design was inspired by a turn of the century tea towel.   A single chrysanthemum and delicate French stem scrollwork sprinkled with granitos grace the top of this special lace trimmed sachet. Traditionally in shadow appliqué the zig zag, blanket, or blind hem stitch is used to secure the underlying fabric shadow.   By substituting the machine pin stitch, it’s possible to replicate the look of Madeira and eliminate the difficult task of needle turning an intricate design like this floral motif by hand.   The tone on tone application plays down the fact that the shadow is on the wrong side of the fabric, instead of the right side as in Madeira appliqué.

Milady's French Pin Cushion

Victorian pin cushions were often elaborately embellished and when not in use occupied a prominent position in the center of a lady’s lace-covered bureau or dressing table.  A French whitework pillow inspired Debbie to design this petite linen sandwich style pin cushion.  Padded satin stitch scallops trim the upper and lower surfaces.  The pincushion is personalized for today’s modern needlewoman with “Initials for Marking” drawn by her great grandmother in 1908.  Woven satin ribbon encircles the high relief initial and secures batting filled insert between the scalloped fabric circles.  In this 6 hour class Debbie shares her newest machine techniques for reproducing the fabulous raised work found on vintage French linens.  Students learn how to recreate traditional hand padding (outline, interior fill, and additional relief), apply cover stitches that replicate hand whitework, and make variable width scalloped edgings using their zigzag sewing machines.

This trio of chatelaine accessories befitting a royal seamstress includes a scissors case, needle book, and pincushion featuring shaped lace insertion and edging, plus inserts of embroidered netting and French lace. Normandy lacework became popular during the first half of the 20th century.  Bits of old lace removed from tattered clothing, scraps too small or frayed to use but too good to throw away, were pieced together by hand to make something new.  Today thanks to new water-soluble papers and threads it’s never been faster or easier to create similar lace patchwork pieces using a conventional zig zag sewing machine.

Quilted Floral Trinket Box                            3 hrs

Sensational Scallops                                      3 hrs

Do you love the look of scallops, but find them difficult to embellish with piping, entredeux, or gathered lace?  Traditionally trim is attached to the upper collar, cuff, or skirt and then the edge is finished by attaching an under collar or facing.  Even experienced seamstresses find it difficult to make sharp, even points using this technique.  By reversing the construction order (finishing the edge, then applying trim using an adaptation of one of Debbie’s newest appliqué techniques) it’s possible for everyone to create perfect scallops.  During this 3 hour “salute to scallops” Debbie unravels the mystery of scallops.  Working on notebook samples, students learn the basics of drafting scallops, machine adjustments to simplify stitching, and four scallop treatments (a quick and easy piping replacement, an appliquéd band, as well as satin and pin-stitched lace applications).  From sweet baby hems and children’s yokes, to ladies collars and linen… scallops are showing up everywhere.  What better time to learn how to transform plain scallops into something truly sensational!
